I am a spiritual being who has come to this planet to make a positive difference, yet I have been addicted to achievement and ice cream.

I am a divine being and a part of the Universe. At the same time, I’m a father of two children, a husband, and a psychologist.

I am the hands and feet of God in this world but I have a brain that likes to chatter a lot about things that don’t really matter.

Living in a world of duality, we are both human and spiritual beings. Yes, we are hybrids, and doesn’t that make for an often confusing scenario!

Sometimes our human self doesn’t play well with our spiritual self. The “needs” of our human self tends to dominate our time and focus. We get busy with the issues of living such as taking care of our living space, our bodily needs, financial obligations, relationships, and a host of other demands of life.

These are important things, for our continued physical existence on this beautiful planet we call Earth, depends on our survival. But what happens when we create lives that are so focused on what we need for our security that there is not an expression of our spiritual aspect, or in some instances, not even a recognition of it?

Of this much I am certain in my own life: merely meeting my security needs is not a formula for happiness and fulfillment. Security can tamp down fear, but it doesn’t create “happy.” Happiness comes to me when I am living my life from a place of joy within me, when I am being what I truly am: a spiritual being.

Until I came to the knowing that I was a spiritual being having a human experience, my spiritual self took a rear seat in my everyday life. Growing up believing that I was a human trying to become spiritual, I had it backwards. I didn’t realize I was already that which I was trying to become.

That realization isn’t easy in a world where we rely upon our physical senses to tell us what is real. It can be difficult to comprehend the unseen aspect of ourselves and to understand that our very essence is non-physical energy. Perhaps the following analogy can be helpful in that regard.

Ice cubes, running water, and steamy water vapor don’t appear to the naked eye to be similar in composition. Yet they are identical. Our physical senses fool us because each looks different. However, despite their ability to take on an infinite variety of shapes, the essence of these three substances is the same.

In like fashion, despite the immense diversity within humanity, we all share a common essence. We call it Love. Within each of us is that divine presence of Love that seeks to express through our physical experience. Made in the image and likeness of God, our very essence is love and we are capable of channeling that energy into loving acts that change others and transform this world.

Once we have the awareness that we are spiritual beings and claim that truth, it changes our lives. No longer are we trying to become something that we are not, instead we are working to remove those obstacles that would keep us from being what we already are. Once realized, the challenge then becomes that of expressing that Love; no small task in this physical existence. It is the ultimate task for each of us and we are confronted with it daily. Yet, it is possible.

In 2013, I want to remember what I really am and with greater effort than ever before, seek to be it. Would you like to join me?
